    Northwoods Retreat is surrounded by the Hiawatha National Forest which provides almost 1 million Acres of public land to hunt, snowmobile, or play in. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is only 10 miles away, and provides over 40 miles of beautiful beaches, sand dunes, and sand stone cliffs. You can see this national park a on the Pictured Rocks Boat Tour, on a air plane tour, in your vehicle, or on foot.

    Munising also offers Grand Island National Recreational Area and the Alger Under Water Preserve for divers and boating enthusiast. The Under Water Preserve is a haven for SCUBA divers and snorkelers with dives from 10 feet below the surface to well over 100 feet. You can also see the under water shipwrecks and the beautiful scenery around Grand Island on the narrated Glass Bottom Boat Tour. The Seney Wildlife Refuge is only a short drive away. Enjoy a peaceful drive through the refuge and observe some of the splendor it has to offer. Alger County has some of the most fantastic waterfalls in the country with both primitive and modern accessible locations. With the hundreds of lakes, streams, and rivers in the area, Alger county also is an ideal location for charter fishing and river fishing in the summer, and ice fishing in the winter.
